Panel: Religion, Education Alternatives and Citizenship
Convenor:
Dr. Alberta Giorgi

The public systems of education are supposed to teach the prospective citizens about their future duties and rights. The relationship between religion and education is indeed a crucial matter: it deals with how future citizens will live and work in societies where religious and cultural diversity will be a fact, therefore it concerns the values, identity and capacity to deal with pluralism and diversity of future citizens. Supranational institutions, such as the EU, variously approached the topic of the role of religious diversity in education: broadly speaking, there is a general agreement on the importance of respecting families’ freedom of education, promoting at the same time intercultural dialogue and mutual respect.
In this frame, with the aim of promoting religiously-inspired education, religious groups have different options, ranging from the promotion of alternative (and competing) schools and schooling to complementary forms of education, such as the weekly Catholic catechesis. The inclusion and/or recognition of diplomas issued by faith-based schools, complementary education, and home-schooling in the systems of public education are characterized by a high degree of variety, depending on the countries’ legal frameworks and political orientation towards public education. In this panel, we will address the topic of religion and education by specifically focusing on the features of ‘alternative’ (meaning: complementary or competing) religious education
